From: Doug McLaren on 13 Jun 2010 01:56 I've got a Rebel T1i and XTi. Both currently have the stock/kit (well, for the Rebel T1i) 18-55 image stabilization lens. For the record, I'm not a very good photographer and certainly don't know all the features on my camera, and most of my pictures are taken in CA or Full Auto mode. Many are taken from a moving bicycle, but the problem I'm referring to isn't specific to that. Previously I had the 18-55 non-IS lens on the XTI and was quite happy with it, but I gave it away and "upgraded" to the IS lens on it. Was that a bad idea? With the IS lens, I seem to get a lot of shots that aren't clear, especially when the light begins to go down, but not enough that it's time for the flash. I don't recall this being such an issue with the non-IS lens on the XTI. The shots are like they're out of focus, but it's more like things moved during the shot, even if they didn't. It happens on both the XTI and T1i now, both having the kit 18-55 IS lens. Turning off the IS seems to reduce the effect, maybe. Taking pictures in bright sunlight or with a good flash greatly reduces the effect (probably because the shutter time is short (in the sun) or doesn't matter much (with the flash.) Is it this lens? Or am I simply losing my mind? Should I try to find two 18-55 non-IS lenses? (Should be pretty easy on Craigslist. I could get other lenses, but the 18-55 ones are pretty easily found and cheap.) The IS does seem to help in some cases, but really, it seems to ruin more pictures than it helps, even if I turn it off. -- Doug McLaren, dougmc(a)frenzied.us
