My partner normally uses an Olympus 420 DSLR but she finds it too bulky
and fiddly for hill walking.

What she wants is a fairly rugged, good quality, compact digital camera
with a proper viewfinder. I've done a quick search and nothing has
emerged as being suitable.

Advice, please.

You'll stuggle to find a "proper viewfinder" (I assume you mean a
optical one) on a compact.

One of the Olympus pen cameras might do - I think you can get
viewfinder addons.

Some Canon Ixus models have a viewfinder but it is only really good
for emergencies. In all other respect though its a great camera. My
wife keeps ours in her handbag all the time.

Dunno what lens(es) she has, but I find a Panasonic G1 is a nice
lightweight outfit with good picture quality. EVF is electronic of
course, but works well. Same 4/3rds sensor size.

Of course there are later versions, but the G1 is selling exceptionally
cheaply now, and the 20mm Panasonic lens is fantastic!
